Don’t wait! The auction takes place next Tuesday’s evening and capacity is limited. We still have tickets but they are drying up fast. We would hate for you to not attend because you waited for the last minute to get yours.

And remember, there is no set price for your ticket. Instead we want you to pay what you can for the tickets and the suggested donation is only $75 thanks to a late extra sponsorship from the always supportive PhotoShelter. We were keen to keep this auction accessible to freelancers.

The International Center of Photography just told us that they would donate a Robert Capa print to the auction.

A week from the event on May 15th at Christie’s we couldn’t ask for better news. Besides being the photographer he was, he Capa was a freelancer and he died after stepping on a landmine in Indochina. Could his print’s inclusion be more appropriate?

They will be donating a print of his iconic D-Day landing image – possibly the most famous war photograph ever?

Huge thanks to ICP. They have been so helpful to us.

The brilliant British portrait photographer Platon has agreed to donate an editioned print to the auction. Remember the famous portrait of President Clinton sitting down wearing a blue tie? That’s him. Vladimir Putin’s Time Person of The Year portrait? Also him. And more recently that incredible portrait of Aung San Suu Kyi with a flower in her hair? Plato again.

Platon has donated a wonderful b&w image of First Lady Michelle Obama. This will be a piece to battle for during the live auction. Be prepared.

From Platon’s website:

Born in London in 1968, Platon was raised in the Greek Isles until his family returned to England in the 1970′s. After working for British Vogue for several years, he was invited to NY to work for the late John Kennedy Jr. and his political magazine, ‘George’.

After shooting portraits for a range of international publications including Rolling Stone, the New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, Esquire, GQ and the Sunday Times Magazine, Platon developed a special relationship with Time magazine, producing over 20 covers. In 2008 he signed a multi-year contract with the New Yorker. As the staff photographer, he has produced a series of large-scale photo essays, two of which won ASME Awards in 2009 and 2010. The following year, Platon teamed up with the Human Rights Watch to help them celebrate those who fight for equality and justice in countries suppressed by political forces.

Platon’s first monograph ‘Platon’s Republic’, was published in 2004 by Phaidon Press. His second book, ‘Power’ – a collection of portraits of over 100 world leaders – was published in 2011 by Chronicle.

In 2011, his work was exhibited in New York at the Matthew Marks Gallery and the Howard Greenberg Gallery. The New York Historical Society also exhibited a solo show of Platon’s Civil Rights photographs.

Platon lives in New York with his wife, daughter and son.

Giles’ print is absolutely gorgeous. It shows 3 young children listening intently during their first day at school in Angola. And it is typical of Giles’ interest in highlighting the lives of the less fortunate, particularly from developing countries. This is what he came back to photography for after a first career in fashion and advertising.

In 2011 an IED exploded under him. He lost two legs and an arm. His desire to help out the family of a fellow photographer is only a fraction of what makes him such an impressive person.

Don’t believe me? Watch the TED talk he gave recently.

Photograph: Giles Duley

Giles spent 10 years as an editorial photographer in the fashion and music industries in both the US and Europe, before focusing his work on humanitarian projects. Working with well respected charities such as Medecins sans Frontières, IOM and UNHCR to highlight lesser known stories deserving of public attention and action. Although documenting challenging, and at times, horrific situations, Duley captures the strength of those who fight their adversity rather than succumb. His photographs draw the viewer to the subject, creating intimacy and empathy for lives differing from ours only in circumstance.

In 2011, whilst on patrol with 75th Cavalry Regiment, United States Army in Afghanistan, Duley stepped on an improvised explosive device. He was severely injured, losing both legs and an arm. He intends to return to work in 2012.

His work has been exhibited and published worldwide in many respected publications including Vogue, GQ, Esquire, Rolling Stone, Sunday Times, The Observer and New Statesman.

In 2010 he was nominated for an Amnesty International Media Award and was a winner at the PX3 – Prix de Paris.

Iconic American photographer Bruce Davidson, most famous for his photographs of Harlem and of the New York subway system in the late 1970s, has agreed to donate a print for the Friends of Anton auction.

Photograph by Emily Davidson.

From the Magnum website:

American, b. 1933

Bruce Davidson began taking photographs at the age of ten in Oak Park, Illinois. While attending Rochester Institute of Technology and Yale University, he continued to further his knowledge and develop his passion. He was later drafted into the army and stationed near Paris. There he met Henri Cartier-Bresson, one of the founders of the renowned cooperative photography agency, Magnum Photos.

When he left military service in 1957, Davidson worked as a freelance photographer for LIFE magazine and in 1958 became a full member of Magnum. From 1958 to 1961 he created such seminal bodies of work as “The Dwarf,” Brooklyn Gang,” and “Freedom Rides.” He received a Guggenheim fellowship in 1962 and created a profound documentation of the civil rights movement in America. In 1963, the Museum of Modern Art in New York presented his early work in a solo show.

In 1967, he received the first grant for photography from the National Endowment for the Arts, having spent two years witnessing the dire social conditions on one block in East Harlem. This work was published by Harvard University Press in 1970 under the title East 100th Street and was later republished and expanded by St. Ann’s Press. The work became an exhibition that same year at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1980, he captured the vitality of the New York Metro’s underworld that was later published in a book, Subway, and exhibited at the International Center for Photography in 1982. From 1991-95 he photographed the landscape and layers of life in Central Park. In 2006, he completed a series of photographs titled “The Nature of Paris,” many of which have been shown and acquired by the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Davidson received an Open Society Institute Individual Fellowship in 1998 to return to East 100th Street His awards include the Lucie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Documentary Photography in 2004 and a Gold Medal Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Arts Club in 2007. Classic bodies of work from his 50-year career have been extensively published in monographs and are included in many major public and private fine art collections around the world.

Vincent Laforet is a Pulitzer Prize–winning photographer, director and three-time winner at the 2010 Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival. He has worked for all major international publications including Vanity Fair, The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, Time, Newsweek, and Life. He is also known for his tilt-shift, aerial and sports photography and for his expertise in the field of HD DSLR cameras.

From his website:
“Vincent, who was born in 1975, began his photography career at the age of 15. He started as a photojournalist, honing his abilities by landing internships with newspapers such as The Los Angeles Times and with Reuters. By the time he was 25, he had established himself as the youngest staff photographer for The New York Times, and by the time he left, he had a Pulitzer for feature photography under his belt. “His images stir with life,” PDN wrote of him in a 2003 “One to Watch” profile. “Athletes are colorful heroes ripped from comic book pages while his wartime photographs successfully wander between the unimaginably large scale and the touchingly human.”

In 2005, American Photo named him one of the “100 Most Influential People in Photography,” and his work has been recognized in the Communication Arts and PDN annuals and by the World Press Photo Awards, the Pictures of the Year Competition, the Overseas Press Club, the National Headliners Awards, and the Pro-Football Hall of Fame. And the accolades continue to come his way. In June 2010, he was honored with a Gold, Silver, and a Bronze in the Titanium category at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival for his work as the director on the groundbreaking Canon “Beyond the Still” competition, which he spearheaded with Grey Advertising.
